Empowering Bangladeshi girls through the outdoors

Empowering Bangladeshi girls through the outdoors

Bangladesh 4 Contributors Launched January 11, 2018 Funding ends:30-12-2018

In this twenty-first century, while our current education system encourages children to grow materialistically and puts minimum emphasis in developing the heart, we as human beings are racing to keep pace with modern times -exponentially losing touch with the Earth, forgetting to respect where we came from. The Earth is a living organism, provides food and shelter, and the ONLY home available to us – yet we continually destroy her. It is high time we humans sought out an upgrade of this type of living, starting from our schooling methods, especially living at a time when so many options are available to us.

The solutions we're proposing

An educational institute set in the outdoors, which integrates the latest scientific findings about development of the mind and combines it with mindfulness techniques and training in nature to empower adolescent girls.

Ösel Bangladesh, founded by Bangladeshi adventurer, explorer and educator Wasfia Nazreen, is an alternate educational hub that serves females through challenging learning expeditions - inspiring self-discovery. Ösel believes in experiential learning, thus the curriculum includes customized courses in the science of human mind, through art, backpacking, camping, trekking, climbing, and other activities in nature while focusing on character building, engaged living, leadership, social activism, service and building empathy for humanity. Methods used include (but not limited to) skills-focused learning, problem solving, team building and self-reliant journeys and activities, always with an environmental focus. The courses are developed keeping in mind specifically the cultural, societal, economical & other relevant struggles of adolescent girls coming from marginalized communities.

The curriculum will be working side by side with existing school’s modern curriculum, advance our understanding of the human mind, and corresponding destructive emotions, while also illuminating how mental training through contemplative practice can lead to reduced suffering, enhance cognitive-emotional functioning, greater happiness, and increased social harmony.

Ösel believes in the tradition and unity it requires for setting up a camp. Our camps are set up virtually and more often in Nature. Students would be enrolled in semester-long courses and skills-building workshops in password protected “classrooms” during all four seasons. After we hear and practice the teachings, on and off the ground for two semesters, we "fold up our tents" and venture during specific seasons, into the wilderness, to put things we learnt in action.

This is a pioneering effort starting for girls in Bangladesh. ALL students at Ösel Bangladesh are on scholarship. And we hope to spread the wings of this approach soon in Nepal too! With your kind donation & other means of support – you not only spread the message of HOPE for these young girls, but also contribute in making the reality of many other locations in South Asia to join hands in this urgently needed approach. Through this curriculum, which is a combination of western outdoors education and eastern philosophies an adolescent gets to experience active learning through first hand training and recreation, within a framework of safety.

The mission of Ösel, Bangladesh is to develop vital education programs and outdoor training for marginalized/under-served adolescent girls in Bangladesh, empowering them to confidently choose lifestyles beyond traditional gender roles. Challenging experiences in the outdoors can leave a lasting impact upon a young person’s intellectual, physical, spiritual, social and moral development. Use of the outdoors makes a major contribution to physical and environmental education and enhances many other curriculum areas. It contributes to personal growth and social awareness and develops skills for life and the world of work. Qualities such as a sense of responsibility and a purpose in life are nurtured powerfully at this stage. There is also a great deal of intrinsic enjoyment and satisfaction to be experienced from participation in outdoor activities. By funding us, you will be joining the infinite potential that Ösel has. Ösel evokes a Heart-Mind Enquiry into all education systems and recognizes that educating the Heart is as important as educating the Mind, if not more. It is a conscious movement to conserve and bring balance to Mother-Earth through empowering women to harness their inner luminosity, and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for joining this movement!
