On the occasion of International Women’s Day 2016, W4 is launching a new social media campaign: "#WhoIsYourHeroine?"

The goal of #WhoIsYourHeroine?* is to highlight the valuable contributions made – to society, science, medicine and the arts; to family, the economy, or the environment -- by women around the world.

Despite considerable humanitarian and social progress in recent decades, in 2016, violence against girls and women remains a global pandemic. In addition to this tragic, unacceptable truth, global economic gender equality remains a far-off goal: according to the World Economic Forum, at the current rate of progress, gender economic parity won’t be reached until 2133 – that’s another 117 years!

#IWD 2016 Did you know?

• Violence against girls and women is a global pandemic: 1 in 3 women experience physical or sexual violence
• Every year 15 million girls are married before 18: that's 41,000 every day; 28 every minute or 1 every 2 seconds
• Globally, women still hold only 22% of parliamentary seats
• In developing countries, women are 23% less likely to be online than men
• Women are more likely than men to be unemployed, in part-time and low-paying jobs

At W4, we focus on the positive opportunities inherent in investing in girls’ and women’s potential and on effective solutions that accelerate progress for girls and women -- for the benefit of us all.

We invite you to be part of our #WhoIsYourHeroine? campaign. It’s simple:

Share with us the name(s) of your heroine(s). Your heroine can be a friend, relative, mentor, a public or historical figure, a famous entrepreneur, a celebrity, or a lesser-known woman who matters to YOU! 

Complete the two sentences below and send them to at contact[at]w4.org to share on social media:

i)                My heroine is: please indicate the full name or first name or title of your heroine;

ii)               She inspires me because: please tell us why she inspires you.

We’d also love a picture of you and/or your heroine:

If she’s someone you know personally, you could take a picture of the two of you!

If she’s a public figure/historical figure or someone you can’t take a picture with, you could send us a picture of your heroine OR a selfie holding a picture of your heroine OR a sign with the name or your heroine on it OR a clue about your heroine (don’t hesitate to be playful and creative).

Please do spread the word about our new campaign and invite people around you to share pictures of their heroines on social media. Our goal is to reach the maximum number of people and celebrate wonderful women around the world!

*#WhoIsYourHeroine? is W4’s third social media campaign, following #WhatIf? and #WomenAreMighty which garnered support from people across 30 countries!
