The challenge

The village of Ban Kochka is situated along the Mekong River in the northwest region of Laos. Its inhabitants—the majority of whom belong to the Khamou ethnic minority—subsist on fishing and farming. A life of poverty is the norm in the region and educational opportunities are extremely limited—especially for girls and young women.
