Eat my Cake: Skills and sustainable livelihoods for vulnerable Indian mothers

THE CHALLENGE

Despite India’s rapid economic growth, women’s socio-economic development remains slow. The country’s traditional patriarchal society constrains women’s progress and stops them from enjoying their fundamental rights in both rural and urban areas.

When they are not the victims of infanticide - 43 million girls are missing in India - young girls suffer gender inequality from birth. A 2012 report by the Thomson Reuters Foundation ranked India as the worst country among the top 20 economies in the world (G20) in which to be a woman. In addition to other perils, girls and women face forced marriages, killings because of insufficient dowries and widespread domestic and sexual violence.

In this context, the mothers of children with disabilities are particularly vulnerable. These women are often rejected by their families and others around them, are obliged to stop working in order to attend to the special needs of their children, and find themselves without a stable source of income.

The solutions we're proposing

By offering these women the opportunity to acquire valuable vocational training and sustainable livelihoods, these young women can gain financial autonomy and rejoin society, while also being able to care for their special-needs children.

The project, called “Eat my Cake” and centered around a bakery that employs vulnerable Indian women, provides vocational training and support for marginalized women.

India has seen the emergence of a tide of middle-class consumers eager to buy original, high-quality products. In this context, French cuisine has gained more and more popularity, thereby guaranteeing “Eat my Cake” a solid client base, with an order book that is already full for months to come. The bakery offers a great array of cakes inspired by French cuisine, such as macaroons and eclairs, in addition to fashionable baked goods such as cupcakes.

THE IMPACT OF GIVING

By donating to “Eat my Cake,” you are helping to empower and integrate marginalized Indian women in Pondicherry, (many of whom are the mothers of disabled children), by giving them access to professional training and an income-generating activity that is adaptable to their families’ needs.

You can give these marginalized mothers the opportunity to secure financial autonomy, improve the well-being of their families and reintegrate themselves into society, which also contributes directly to the local economy.
